The SkyWave Segmented complex VCO by SetonixSynth is a true standout in the Eurorack format, offering an exceptional combination of compact design, impressive features, and unparalleled versatility. At $299 USD and 14hp, it’s one of the most feature-rich analog VCOs in its size category, delivering tremendous value for both seasoned modular veterans and newcomers alike.

Step-Based Control Scheme

The SkyWave introduces a groundbreaking step-based control scheme that allows you to create dynamic, evolving waveforms. This is achieved through an internal feedback loop where the oscillator’s clock output drives an onboard step sequencer. Each oscillator cycle advances the sequencer, producing waveforms and amplitudes defined by user-adjustable settings.

The result? Continuously shifting waveforms with precise pitch tracking and rich harmonic textures. Unlike static oscillators, the SkyWave’s approach lets you "sequence" waveforms and amplitudes in real time. For instance, you can alternate between a smooth triangle wave and a sharp pulse wave, each with distinct phase and amplitude settings. Add CV control, and you unlock even greater modulation potential—particularly when paired with the Scaffold Expander.

This innovative design refines concepts typically achieved with external modules, like pairing simple VCOs with sequential switches (the idea derived from the use of their discontinued Laka), into a compact, powerful unit. Smooth interpolation between steps, extensive CV control, and a wide sonic range make the SkyWave a game-changer.

Compact Yet Limitless

The SkyWave packs a staggering range of features and sonic capabilities into a space-efficient footprint. Despite its compact size, it rivals—and often surpasses—larger digital oscillators, offering both versatility and ease of use.

Dialing in sounds is intuitive, yet the module rewards deeper exploration. Whether you’re creating melodic leads, basslines, or experimental textures, the SkyWave delivers a consistent sense of discovery. This balance between accessibility and depth makes it ideal for both live performers and studio sound designers seeking maximum functionality without sacrificing space.

Customizability Through Switches

One unique feature is the SkyWave’s DIP switch panel, hidden on the back of the module. These switches let you customize key parameters to suit your patching needs:

  • SubClock: Syncs with the Scaffold Expander’s subclock system, providing precise timing adjustments.

  • Internal Clock: Toggles between the SkyWave’s internal clock and an external clock source.

  • Reset: Adjusts the reset functionality to respond to triggers or gates.

  • TZFM/PM: Switches between Through-Zero Frequency Modulation (TZFM) and Through-Zero Phase Modulation (TZPM).

While these switches add flexibility, accessing them requires flipping the module and using a small tool—a minor inconvenience for such powerful customization.

Through-Zero FM and PM Modes

The SkyWave’s TZFM and TZPM capabilities make it a powerhouse for crafting harmonically rich, evolving sounds while maintaining pitch stability.

  • TZFM modulates the waveform’s frequency, enabling the modulator to pass through zero frequency. This produces complex harmonic structures.

  • TZPM shifts the waveform’s phase, creating unique textures that differ subtly from FM.

These modes give the SkyWave incredible versatility, allowing you to explore everything from lush harmonics to gritty, aggressive timbres.

“Pitch-Locked FM” Technique

A standout application of the SkyWave is a technique I call "pitch-locked FM." This involves sending pitch information to a modulator VCO, sending its square output to the sync input of the SkyWave as the carrier. The modulator’s ramp output is routed to the SkyWave’s linear FM input, with the audio output coming from the SkyWave itself.

The result? Dense, harmonically rich tones with incredible clarity and depth. Modulating the frequency of the SkyWave in this context allows for intuitive harmonic exploration, akin to using a filter but with much greater complexity and depth.

In the following patch notes, the SkyWave functions as the secondary oscillator.

Pairing this technique with modules like the Takaab VLH or their triple half-wave rectifier (3HWR) allows for even greater sculpting, delivering dynamic, complex timbres that feel alive and full of energy.

The Scaffold Expander

The Scaffold Expander takes the SkyWave to new heights, adding CV inputs for each Level and Wave knob. These CV inputs blend external modulation with the SkyWave’s own settings, offering even more morphing harmonic control.

Additionally, the Scaffold introduces a resettable SubClock output. This output enhances sequencing potential, whether normalized back to the SkyWave for repeating patterns or used to clock external modules like step sequencers or slope generators. In just 4HP, the Scaffold transforms the SkyWave into an even more dynamic and integrated part of your system. For those looking to maximize their SkyWave experience, the Scaffold is an essential upgrade.

Design Brilliance

The thoughtful design of the SkyWave reflects the genius of Jack, the creator behind SetonixSynth. Building on concepts from the Marsupial Dual VCF and the discontinued Laka Sequential Voltage Processor + Mixer—which served as a precursor to the SkyWave—this module represents the pinnacle of SetonixSynth’s innovation. It seamlessly combines advanced functionality with intuitive usability, surpassing expectations in both form and function.

SkyWave by SetonixSynth in Sum

The SkyWave Segmented VCO isn’t just another oscillator; it’s a tool for redefining what’s possible in modular synthesis. With its innovative step-based control scheme, through-zero modulation capabilities, and exceptional sonic flexibility, the SkyWave stands as a testament to SetonixSynth’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of Eurorack design.

Whether you’re a performer seeking dynamic waveforms or a sound designer craving rich harmonic textures, the SkyWave delivers in spades. Paired with the Scaffold Expander, it becomes an indispensable centerpiece for any modular setup. For $299, this module offers unparalleled value and endless creative potential, making it a worthy addition to any Eurorack system.
